Documents have different roles

A complaint states claims; a summons communicates formal notice; service concerns delivery; an answer responds to allegations; and a judgment is a court’s decision. Rules and local practice determine what follows each document. [1]

Standing is not a synonym for subject-matter jurisdiction

Words do not choose a procedure

Rules concerning dismissal, summary judgment, default, discovery, evidence, and post-judgment relief each have their own text. Vocabulary is useful for reading a record, but it is not a substitute for determining an individual deadline or action.
