How to check a citation

Find the original source

Start with the issuer: legislature, agency, court, or official record repository. Check whether the quoted source is complete and whether the title, number, and date match.

Read scope before conclusion

An agency matter must identify the respondent and operative terms. A court opinion must be read for its holding and posture. A statute must be read with its definitions and conditions. A file number, quotation, or screenshot alone does not establish coverage.

Prefer a narrower statement

When a source supports a general proposition but not a promised outcome, describe only the supported proposition. This practice helps separate public education from unsupported certainty.
